Lyrics

Saul was thirty years old when he became king He reigned over Israel forty-two years Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel Two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and Mount Bethel

Jonathan struck the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba The Philistines heard of it Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land Let the Hebrews hear, he said

All Israel heard that Saul had struck the garrison And that Israel was considered an abomination The Philistines assembled themselves to fight Thirty thousand chariots, six thousand horsemen

When the men of Israel saw they were in trouble The people hid themselves in caves and thickets Some had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad But Saul was yet in Gilgal

The people were scattering from him He stayed seven days according to the time set by Samuel But Samuel didn’t come The people were scattering away

Saul said, Bring the burnt offering to me I forced myself therefore and offered the burnt offering Samuel said, What have you done You have done foolishly

You have not kept the commandment of the LORD The LORD would have established your kingdom on Israel forever But now your kingdom will not continue The LORD has sought for himself a man after his own heart

He has appointed him to be prince over his people Because you have not kept that which the LORD commanded Samuel arose and went from Gilgal Saul counted the people about six hundred men

Saul and Jonathan his son and those with them stayed in Geba But the Philistines encamped in Michmash The raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies Israel had no blacksmith in the land

Lest the Hebrews make themselves swords or spears The Israelites went down to sharpen their tools So it came to pass in the day of battle Neither sword nor spear was found in their hand
