Known first as Joseph but renamed Barnabas ('Son of Encouragement') by the apostles in Jerusalem, he was a Levite from Cyprus who shared his property with the church. He introduced the newly converted Paul to the apostles and later became Paul's missionary companion, traveling together on the first missionary journey. His ministry bridged the Jerusalem church and the growing Gentile missions.
