Dathan was a Reubenite who rebelled against Moses alongside his brother Abiram and Korah the Levite, questioning God's leadership and structure. The earth opened beneath them and swallowed them alive, destroying their families and possessions as God's judgment. Moses warned Israel to remember this sign of what happens to those who rebel against the Lord's appointed leaders.
