Hagar was an Egyptian slave to Sarah who bore Ishmael to Abraham at Sarah's urging. When Sarah later had Isaac, tension and jealousy arose, and Hagar was cast out into the wilderness. God met her there and cared for her and her son, establishing Ishmael's line as a distinct people under God's providence.
