Several men named Hananiah appear in post-exilic records and Jeremiah's prophecies, but the most prominent is the false prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, who publicly contradicted Jeremiah's message of exile. Hananiah prophesied that the captives would return within two years, directly opposing Jeremiah's word of seventy-year captivity. Jeremiah prophesied Hananiah's death as judgment for false prophecy, which soon came to pass.
