Hanun was the king of Ammon who succeeded his father Nahash. When David sent messengers to express condolences after Nahash's death, Hanun's advisors convinced him David was spying, so he humiliated the messengers. David's response led to war, in which Hanun was defeated and his kingdom subjugated.
