Herod was king of Judea when Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Troubled by news of the Messiah's birth, he sought to kill the infant Jesus, ordering the massacre of all boys in Bethlehem under two years old. Joseph fled with Jesus to Egypt, and only after Herod's death did the family return to Nazareth. Herod's fear and violence stand as the world's opposition to Christ's coming.
