Several men named Ishmael appear in later biblical records, but the most significant is the son of Nethaniah, a royal officer who murdered the Babylonian-appointed governor Gedaliah at Mizpah. Ishmael also killed the officials guarding Gedaliah and scattered the Jewish remnant, with only Johanan and others able to rescue some of the survivors. His assassination halted the brief period of organized Jewish governance.
