Manasseh became king at age twelve and reigned fifty-five years, longer than any other Judean monarch, though his early reign was marked by wholesale rejection of his father Hezekiah's reforms. He set up idols, practiced sorcery, and brought violence against the prophets. Scripture records that he was captured by Assyrian forces, repented in captivity, was restored, and then returned to reform the kingdom.
