Nebat was the father of Jeroboam, first king of the northern kingdom of Israel. Though Nebat himself does not appear in any narrative, his name becomes a mark of infamy - subsequent kings of Israel are frequently condemned as following 'the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat.' His patronymic thus represents an entire dynasty and the idolatrous path that divided and corrupted the northern kingdom.
