A court scribe under King Josiah, Shaphan was sent to collect the temple funds and was the first to hear about the discovery of the Book of the Law from High Priest Hilkiah. He brought the scroll to the king, initiating Josiah's reformation. His family held several important positions, including his son Ahikam, who protected the prophet Jeremiah and whose descendants continued in positions of trust.
